Kaelin)for a number of years, and he was a customer as well (who really liked titles about trains! ;) ). He especially liked that JC was a fan of the movie "Viva Max" based on his novel of the same name, and he expressed much gratitude to JC for his emailing support to him after the unmerited criticism he received after the 2012 presidential debates. Jim Lehrer, American journalist, novelist, screenwriter, and playwright (d. January 23, 2020) is #born James Charles Lehrer, in Wichita, Kansas to Lois Catherine (nee Chapman), a teacher and bank clerk, and Harry Frederick Lehrer, a bus station manager (Jim Lehrer was a fan of buses, bus stations, trains and train stations throughout his life). Lehrer was the executive editor and a news anchor for the PBS NewsHour on PBS, known for his role as a debate moderator during U.S. presidential election campaigns. He authored numerous fiction and non-fiction books that drew upon his experience as a newsman, along with his interests in history and politics. Jim Lehrer died at his home in Washington, D.C., at the age of 85 from a heart attack. His remains were cremated, and the disposition of his ashes have been kept private. He is buried straight down the street on Orient Way in Lyndhurst, New Jersey from where a number of adventures of my tender teenage youth took place in Rutherford, New Jersey... ;) ) ========= May 19: The Joey Ramone Birthday Bash: -- May 19, 1951: #BOTD: #HBD! Joey Ramone, American singer and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist and a founding member of the punk rock band The Ramones, whose image, voice, and tenure with The Ramones made him a countercultural icon and who along with the guitarist Johnny Ramone were the only two original members who stayed in the band until the disbandment in 1996 (d. April 15, 2001) is #born Jeffrey Ross Hyman in Queens, New York City. Joey's birthday is celebrated annually as "The Joey Ramone Birthday Bash", hosted in New York City by his brother Mickey Leigh and, until 2007, his mother, Charlotte. Joey Ramone was born into the Jewish family of Charlotte (nee Mandell) and Noel Hyman. with a parasitic twin growing out of his back, which was incompletely formed and surgically removed. The family resided in Forest Hills, Queens, where Hyman and his future Ramones bandmates attended Forest Hills High School. He grew up with his brother Mickey Leigh, who at the age of 14 was playing in a band with John Cummings (Johnny Ramone) and Tommy Erdelyi (Tommy Ramone), and went on to become the guitarist of Birland, The Rattlers, Sibling Rivalry (with his brother Joey) and STOP. Though generally a happy person, Joey was something of an outcast, diagnosed at 18 with obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia. Jeffrey Hyman was a fan of the Beatles, the Who, David Bowie, and The Stooges among other bands, particularly oldies and the Phil Spector-produced girl groups. The Who in particular inspired him when he saw them perform, aged 16. In 1972 Jeffrey joined the glam punk band Sniper, who played at the Mercer Arts Center, Max's Kansas City and the Coventry, alongside New York Dolls, Suicide, and Queen Elizabeth III. Hyman played with Sniper under the name Jeff Starship. Hyman continued playing with Sniper until early 1974, when he was replaced by Alan Turner. In 1974, Jeffrey Hyman co-founded the punk rock band the Ramones with friends John Cummings (Johnny Ramone) and Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone). Colvin was already using the pseudonym "Dee Dee Ramone" and the others also adopted stage names using "Ramone" as their surname: Cummings became Johnny Ramone and Hyman became Joey Ramone. The name "Ramone" stems from Paul McCartney; he briefly used the stage name "Paul Ramon" during 1960-61, when the Beatles, still an unknown five-piece band called the Silver Beetles, did a tour of Scotland and all took up pseudonyms; Paul used it again on the song "My Dark Hour" from the 1969 Steve Miller album Brave New World, where he provieded backing vocals, drums, guitar and bass guitar using that name. Joey Ramone initially served as the group's drummer while Dee Dee Ramone was the original vocalist. However, when Dee Dee's vocal cords proved unable to sustain the demands of constant live performances, Ramone's manager, Thomas Erdelyi (the future Tommy Ramone) suggested Joey switch to vocals. Jeffrey's brother Mickey Leigh said "I was shocked when the band came out. Joey was the lead singer and I couldn't believe how good he was. Because he'd been sitting in my house with my acoustic guitar, writing these songs like 'I Don't Care', fucking up my guitar, and suddenly he's this guy on stage who you can't take your eyes off of." After a series of unsuccessful auditions in search of a new drummer, Erdelyi took over on drums, and became Tommy Ramone. The Ramones were a major influence on the punk rock movement in the United States, Japan and throught the world, though they achieved only minor commercial success. Their only record with enough U.S. sales to be certified gold in Ramone's lifetime was the compilation album "Ramones Mania". Recognition of the band's importance built over the years, and they are now represented in many assessments of all-time great rock music, such as the Rolling Stone lists of the 50 Greatest Artists of All Time and 25 Greatest Live Albums of All Time, VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock, and Mojo's 100 Greatest Albums. In 2002, the Ramones were voted the second greatest rock and roll band ever in Spin, behind the Beatles. In 1996, after a tour with the Lollapalooza music festival, the band played its final show and then disbanded. In 1995, Ramone was diagnosed with lymphoma. He kept his condition private until it was revealed on March 19, 2001, that he was battling the disease. He died of the illness at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, a month before he would have turned 50. He was reportedly listening to the song "In A Little While" by U2 when he died. In an interview in 2014 for Radio 538, U2 lead singer Bono confirmed that Joey Ramone's family told him that Ramone listened to the song before he died, which Andy Shernoff (The Dictators) also confirmed. Joey's funeral was attended by former bandmates Tommy, Richie and C. J. Ramone, along with Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, and Joan Jett. Ramone is interred at New Mount Zion Cemetery on Orient Way in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. His solo album Don't Worry About Me was released posthumously in 2002, and features the single "What A Wonderful World", a cover of the Louis Armstrong standard. On November 30, 2003, a block of East 2nd Street in New York City was officially renamed Joey Ramone Place. It is the block where Hyman once lived with bandmate Dee Dee Ramone and is near the former site of the music club CBGB, where the Ramones began their career. My first childhood friend was Gregory, whose older brothers were members of Nation Of Islam (NOI) Mosque No. 7 (modern Masjid Malcolm Shabazz mosque) who followed Malcolm into the Organization Of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), and whose aunts (who showered me with affection) were Baptist emigres from the south -- so my education in African American Civil Rights, Liberation Theology and Black Power started when I first met Greg in Kindergarten! There are other things that connect me to Brother Malcolm; not least of which that I've spent much of my life studying and analyzing his speeches :) . ) ========= May 19, 1925: #BOTD: #HBD! Malcolm X, African American Muslim minister, black nationalist and civil rights activist, an electric and popular figure during the American Civil Rights Movement best known for his advocacy for the rights of blacks (d. February 21, 1965) is #born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska. He relocated to New York City's Harlem neighborhood in 1943, after spending his teenage years in a series of foster homes following his father's murder and his mother's hospitalization. In New York, Little engaged in several illicit activities, and was eventually sentenced to ten years in prison in 1946 for larceny and breaking and entering. In prison, he joined the Nation Of Islam (NOI) and changed his name to Malcolm X. After his release, he quickly became one of the organization's most influential leaders after being paroled in 1952. During the civil rights movement, Malcolm X served as the public face of the controversial group for a dozen years, where he advocated for black supremacy, the separation of black and white Americans, and rejected the notion of the civil rights movement for its emphasis on racial integration. He also expressed pride in some of the social achievements he made with the Nation, particularly its free drug rehabilitation program. In the 1950s, Malcolm X endured surveillance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the Nation's supposed links to communism. In the 1960s, Malcolm X began to grow disillusioned with the Nation of Islam, and in particular, with its leader Elijah Muhammad. Expressing many regrets about his time with them, which he had come to regard as largely wasted, he instead embraced Sunni Islam. Malcolm X then began to advocate for racial harmony after completing the Hajj, whereby he also became known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz. After a brief period of travel across Africa, he notably repudiated the Nation of Islam, and founded Muslim Mosque, Inc. (MMI) and the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) to emphasize Pan-Africanism. Throughout 1964, his conflict with the Nation Of Islam intensified, and he was repeatedly sent death threats. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was preparing to address the OAAU at the Audubon Ballroom on Broadway at West 165th Street in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City when he was assassinated by Thomas Hagan, Thomas Johnson, and Norman Butler, three members of the Nation of Islam. The trio were sentenced to indeterminate life sentences, and were required to serve a minimum of 20 years in prison. Evidence of conspiracy regarding the assassination, and its conception and aid by leading members of the Nation and law enforcement agencies, have persisted for decades after the shooting. Malcolm X was posthumously honored with Malcolm X Day, which commemorates him in various cities and states nationwide. Hundreds of streets and schools in the U.S. have been renamed in his honor, while the Audubon Ballroom, the site of his assassination, was in-part redeveloped in 2005 to accommodate the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. (#JCKaelin here: Morley Safer did an historic "60 Minutes" television report on my dear friend and associate Iva Toguri, falsely known as "Tokyo Rose", a falsehood which this report exposed more effectively in the public mind than any other. Iva told me that when 60 Minutes contacted her to do this story, she agreed, but only if Mike Wallace didn't do the report, as she thought he might be too belligerent in his questioning, a problem Iva had had for decades with many reporters over the decades. Froadcast journalist Bill Kurtis, who had done his own investigative report on Iva that resulted in his becoming Iva's life-long close friend and confidante, helped to ensure that Safer would do the 60 Minutes report, and as Iva understood that Safer had been a Vietnam War correspondent (another war involving Asians), she agreed to do the interview :) ) ========= May 19, 2016: #DOTD: #RIP: Morley Safer, Canadian-born broadcast journalist, war correspondent, reporter, and correspondent for CBS News (b. November 8, 1931) #dies at his New York home from pneumonia, just eight days after announcing his retirement from 60 Minutes following 46 seasons with the show. Four days prior to his death, CBS aired a special 60 Minutes episode covering Safer's 61-year journalism career. Safer was laid to rest at Roselawn Avenue Cemetery in Toronto. Morley Safer was born to an Austrian Jewish family in Toronto, Ontario. Morley Safer was best known for his long tenure on the news magazine 60 Minutes, whose cast he joined in 1970 after its second year on television. He was the longest-serving reporter on 60 Minutes, the most watched and most profitable program in television history. During his 60-year career as a broadcast journalist, Safer received numerous awards, including twelve Emmys, a Lifetime Achievement Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, three Overseas Press Awards, three Peabody Awards, two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards, and the Paul White Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association. In 2009, Safer donated his papers to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. May 19: Frog Jumping Jubilee Day: -- This treasured tradition commemorates and dates back to the short story by Mark Twain known as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." City of Angels Camp is where the tale of Frog Jumping Jubilee Day begins and there's so much more to learn. In City of Angels Camp, both the locals' beloved County Fair and International Frog Jumping Contest happen in the third week of May where frogs are not only made to jump but to compete with one another. There is so much more to this story than just the holiday itself. A mix of history and fairytales come together on Frog Jumping Jubilee Day, an annual event attended by 30,000 to 50,000 people. Frog Jumping Jubilee Day as a tradition has been cherished since 1928, located in the beautiful rolling foothills of California's Gold Country, City of Angels Camp. The internationally known Calaveras County Fair is where the Jumping Frog Jubilee happens, and can be better understood through a little bit of literary history. This treasured tradition commemorates and dates back to the short story by Mark Twain known as "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." In the 1860s, Mark Twain, who was still known as Samuel Clemens, was trying to find a way to mine gold to be able to pay off his debt. A local bartender in California, specifically in Angels Camp was immersively retelling a funny and absurd story of those frog competitions that some locals enjoy in the small town. Clemens didn't find gold but he did find his true calling to become a writer. "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" was published as a book in 1867. This narrative and legend from the Gold Rush not only shaped Twain's popularity but also made little old Angels Camp and Calaveras Camp internationally known. A road was fixed in Angels Camp and suddenly in the 1920s, residents who were close to Twain were inspired to celebrate the town by holding the first annual, international frog jumping contest in Angels Camp itself. It was so successful that two years later, they decided to merge the Country Fair and Frog Jump event at their home in the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp, California. May 19: National Barber Mental Health Awareness Day: -- It's a near certainty that when you sit down in your barber's chair they're going to ask you how you're doing. National Barber Mental Health Awareness Day was created to ensure that we're remembering to return the question, to check in with our barbers as they so often check in on us. Barbers work intimately with multiple people every day, dealing with different energies and personalities all the time. It's not uncommon for a customer to unload their personal struggles onto their barber and that can be a heavy burden to carry, especially if the barber is having a bad day themselves. Today we all recognize that barbers take on a lot, and to give them the opportunity to talk about their problems, too. Recent times have seen a growing recognition for the unique role that barbers can and do take on in helping people with their mental health. One such example is a non-profit venture that sees a barbershop double as a place for men of color to talk about their problems. A similar program is forming in the U.K. where the N.H.S., the U.K.'s public health service, launched an initiative in 2020 to provide mental health first aid training for barbers. Barbers have been practicing their trade for thousands of years but it's only as the world has become increasingly aware of mental health that barbers have been acknowledged for often taking on the role of a therapist, listening to their customers' problems with an empathetic ear. May 19: Celebrate Your Elected Officials Day: -- On this day, voters get together to celebrate their elected representatives. Elected officials or delegates include city council members, mayors, governors, members of state legislatures, senators, representatives in the United States Congress, and even the President of the United States! They have occupied powerful positions in the government because you and I voted them to power. In any democracy, the role of the voters is as much, if not more, important than the roles of the elected officials. On Celebrate Your Elected Officials Day we express our appreciation to these officials. Although the origin of Celebrate Your Elected Officials Day is unclear, it is still widely known as a means to appreciate the roles each individual plays to ensure a functional representative democracy. The United States is a representative democracy because officials are elected by democratic elections at the federal, state, and local levels to make decisions on behalf of the people. The president is elected indirectly by the people. Each of the 50 states in the United States has the power to elect its own government and create its own laws. Each state further has three branches - a branch headed by a governor, a legislative body, and a judicial branch. At the local level, the states are further divided into counties, municipalities, townships, school districts, and special districts. Their powers vary widely between the states. The United States also has a two-party system that is dominated by the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, although other parties also exist. Since the mid-20th century, the Democratic Party has become synonymous with the American liberalism platform and the Republican Party with American conservatism. To partake in the United States democracy, suffrage is granted to citizens 18 years of age and older. Although such societies aim for their elected officials to be representative of the people, there are numerous obstacles that democracies face, which are typically corruption and inefficiencies. In the United States, a number of corporations, wealthy individuals, and other political pressure groups have been accused of spending large amounts of money on political campaigns. This is a matter of concern since they have the means to influence individual candidates and officeholders to design public policy in their favor over the majority of Americans. There are also concerns that individuals in certain communities of racial and religious minorities do not have similar political opportunities as compared to their majority counterparts. While the elections in the United States have been considered to be one of the most democratic and peaceful ones in the world, in 2020, the United States was categorized as a "flawed democracy." According to the Democracy Index, it has since remained in said category after being degraded from "full democracy" in 2016. Yet, elections in the United States continue to be relatively more democratic than 35 hybrid and 57 authoritarian regimes in the world as of 2020. It has been an official state holiday in the state of Illinois since 2015, and it has also been observed in Missouri since 2019. September 2, 1969) is #born Nguyen Sinh Cung in the central Vietnamese village of Kim Lien in the Nghe An province of the French protectorate of Annam (Trung Ky), French Indochina; following Confucian tradition, his father gave him a new name at the age of 10: Nguyen That Thanh. The Viet Minh defeated the French Union in 1954 at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, ending the First Indochina War, and resulting in the division of Vietnam, with the Viet Minh in control of North Vietnam, and anti-communists in control of South Vietnam. He was a key figure in the People's Army Of Vietnam during the Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975. Ho officially stepped down from power in 1965 due to health problems, though he continued to hold the title of President until his death in 1969. With the outcome of the Vietnam war still in question, H£ Chi Minh died of heart failure at his home in Hanoi at 9:47 in the morning at the age of 79 years old. His embalmed body is currently on display in The President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, Vietnam, despite his will which stated that he wanted to be cremated. Due to the sensitivity of his death being onf Vietnam's Independence Day, the North Vietnamese government originally delayed announcing Ho's death until the next day, September 3. His funeral was attended by about 250,000 people and 5,000 official guests, which included many international mourners. Representatives from 40 countries and regions were also presented. During the mourning period, North Vietnam received more than 22,000 condolences letters from 20 organizations and 110 countries across the world, such as France, Ethiopia, Yugoslavia, Cuba, Zambia, China, the USSR and many others, mostly Socialist countries. He was not initially replaced as president; instead, a "collective leadership" composed of several ministers and military leaders took over, known as the Politburo. The Ho Chi Minh Trail was a logistical network of roads and trails that ran from North Vietnam to South Vietnam through the kingdoms of Laos and Cambodia. The system provided support, in the form of manpower and materiel, to the Viet Cong (or "VC") and the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), during the Vietnam War. Construction for the network began following the North Vietnamese invasion of Laos in July 1959. It was named by the U.S. after the North Vietnamese president H£ Chi Minh. January 28, 1853) #dies aged 42 in Dos Rios, Captaincy General Of Cuba, Spanish Empire (modern Rio Cauto, Cuba) while fighting in The Battle Of Dos Rios, near the confluence of the rivers Contramaestre and Cauto, during Cuban War Of Independence. Marti's revolutionary collaborator Juan Gualberto Gomez had recognized that the Spaniards had a strong position between palm trees, so he ordered his men to disengage. He was very politically active and is considered an important philosopher and political theorist. Power in the early Commonwealth was vested primarily in the Parliament and a Council of State. During the period, fighting continued, particularly in Ireland and Scotland, between the parliamentary forces and those opposed to them, in the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland and the Anglo-Scottish war of 1650-1652. In 1653, after dissolution of the Rump Parliament, the Army Council adopted the Instrument of Government which made Oliver Cromwell Lord Protector of a united "Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland", inaugurating the period now usually known as the Protectorate. The term Commonwealth is sometimes used for the whole of 1649 to 1660 - called by some the Interregnum - although for other historians, the use of the term is limited to the years prior to Cromwell's formal assumption of power in 1653. In retrospect, the period of republican rule for England was a failure in the short term. During the 11-year period, no stable government was established to rule the English state for longer than a few months at a time. Several administrative structures were tried, and several Parliaments called and seated, but little in the way of meaningful, lasting legislation was passed. The only force keeping it together was the personality of Oliver Cromwell, who exerted control through the military by way of the "Grandees", being the Major-Generals and other senior military leaders of the New Model Army. Not only did Cromwell's regime crumble into near anarchy upon his death and the brief administration of his son, but the monarchy he overthrew was restored in 1660, and its first act was officially to erase all traces of any constitutional reforms of the Republican period. Still, the memory of the Parliamentarian cause, dubbed the Good Old Cause by the soldiers of the New Model Army, lingered on. It would carry through English politics and eventually result in a constitutional monarchy. The Commonwealth period is better remembered for the military success of Thomas Fairfax, Oliver Cromwell, and the New Model Army. Besides resounding victories in the English Civil War, the reformed Navy under the command of Robert Blake defeated the Dutch in the First Anglo-Dutch War which marked the first step towards England's naval supremacy. When the English invaded, the Spanish freed their slaves, who fled into the interior, where they established free and independent communities as Maroons. Spanish attempts to retake Jamaica ended with defeats at Ocho Rios in 1657, and Rio Nuevo in 1658. After this, English Governor Edward D'Oyley persuaded de Bolas to switch sides; without their support, Issasi finally accepted defeat, and fled to Cuba. Despite continuing their diplomatic efforts to have it returned, Spain eventually ceded the Colony of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands in the 1670 Treaty of Madrid. Under British rule, the island became a hugely profitable possession, producing large quantities of sugar for export. In 1654, Oliver Cromwell and his Council of State planned a surprise attack on Spanish America. There were a number of reasons for this, including the Commonwealth's weak economic position, and finding an outlet for large numbers of disgruntled veterans from the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. November 10, 1938) is #born Ali Riza Oglu Mustafa in Salonica, Salonica Vilayet, Ottoman Empire. His second name Kemal (meaning "perfection" or "maturity" in Arabic) was given to him by his mathematics teacher, Captain Uskuplu Mustafa Efendi. According to Afet Inan, his teacher gave this name " in admiration of [Ataturk's] capability and maturity"; according to other sources, his teacher wanted to distinguish Ataturk from another student who was also named Mustafa. Ataturk undertook sweeping progressive reforms, which modernized Turkey into a secular, industrializing nation. Ideologically a secularist and nationalist, his policies and socio-political theories became known as Kemalism. Ataturk came to prominence for his role in securing the Ottoman Turkish victory at the Battle of Gallipoli (1915) during World War I. Following the defeat and dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, he led the Turkish National Movement, which resisted mainland Turkey's partition among the victorious Allied powers. Establishing a provisional government in the present-day Turkish capital Ankara (known in English at the time as Angora), he defeated the forces sent by the Allies, thus emerging victorious from what was later referred to as the Turkish War Of Independence. He subsequently proceeded to abolish the decrepit Ottoman Empire and proclaimed the foundation of the Turkish Republic in its place. As the president of the newly formed Turkish Republic, Ataturk initiated a rigorous program of political, economic, and cultural reforms with the ultimate aim of building a modern, progressive and secular nation-state. He made primary education free and compulsory, opening thousands of new schools all over the country. He also introduced the Latin-based Turkish alphabet, replacing the old Ottoman Turkish alphabet. Turkish women received equal civil and political rights during Ataturk's presidency. In particular, women were given voting rights in local elections by Act no. 1580 on April 3, 1930 and a few years later, in 1934, full universal suffrage. His government carried out a policy of Turkification, trying to create a homogeneous, unified and above all secular nation under the Turkish banner. Under Ataturk, the minorities in Turkey were asked to speak Turkish in public, but were allowed to maintain their own languages in private; non-Turkish toponyms were replaced and minorities were ordered to get a Turkish surname. The Turkish Parliament granted him the surname Ataturk in 1934, which means "Father Of The Turks", in recognition of the role he played in building the modern Turkish Republic. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk died at Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul, Turkey at the age of 57. He was succeeded as president by his long-time prime minister Ismet Inonu. His state funeral was held in the capital city of Ankara on November 21, 1938 and was attended by dignitaries from seventeen nations. A delegation from The League Of Nations was also present at the funeral procession. May 19, 1919: The Aftermath Of World War I: 20th Century Revolutions: The Revolutions Of 1917-1923: The Turkish War of Independence: -- Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the hero of the Turkish forces at The Battle Of Gallipoli during World War I, lands at Samsun on the Anatolian Black Sea coast, on his 38th birthday, initiating what is later termed the Turkish War Of Independence (May 19, 1919 - July 24, 1923), a series of military campaigns waged by the Turkish National Movement after parts of the Ottoman Empire were occupied and partitioned following its defeat in World War I. These campaigns were directed against Greece in the west, Armenia in the east, France in the south, loyalists and separatists in various cities, and British and Ottoman troops around Constantinople (Istanbul). The ethnic demographics of the modern Turkish Republic were significantly impacted by the earlier Armenian genocide and the deportations of Greek-speaking, Orthodox Christian Rum people. The Turkish nationalist movement carried out massacres and deportations to eliminate native Christian populations-a continuation of the Armenian genocide and other ethnic cleansing operations during World War I. Following these campaigns of ethnic cleansing the historic Christian presence in Anatolia was destroyed, in large part, and the Muslim demographic had increased from 80% to 98%. While World War I ended for the Ottoman Empire with the Armistice of Mudros, the Allied Powers continued occupying and seizing land for imperialist designs, as well as to prosecute former members of the Committee of Union and Progress and those involved in the Armenian genocide. Ottoman military commanders therefore refused orders from both the Allies and the Ottoman government to surrender and disband their forces. This crisis reached a head when sultan Mehmed VI dispatched Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Ataturk), a well-respected and high-ranking general, to Anatolia to restore order; however, Mustafa Kemal became an enabler and eventually leader of Turkish nationalist resistance against the Ottoman government, Allied powers, and Christian minorities. In an attempt to establish control over the power vacuum in Anatolia, the Allies persuaded Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos to launch an expeditionary force into Anatolia and occupy Smyrna (Izmir), beginning the Turkish War Of Independence. A nationalist counter government led by Mustafa Kemal was established in Ankara when it became clear the Ottoman government was backing the Allied powers. The Allies soon pressured the Ottoman government in Constantinople into suspending the Constitution, shuttering the Parliament, and signing the Treaty of Sevres, a treaty unfavorable to Turkish interests that the "Ankara government" declared illegal. In the ensuing war, irregular militia defeated the French forces in the south, and undemobilized units went on to partition Armenia with Bolshevik forces, resulting in the Treaty of Kars (October 1921). The Western Front of the independence war was known as the Greco-Turkish War, in which Greek forces at first encountered unorganized resistance. However Ismet Pasha's organization of militia into a regular army paid off when Ankara forces fought the Greeks in the First and Second Battle of Inonu. The Greek army emerged victorious in the Battle of Kutahya-Eskisehir and decided to drive on the nationalist capital of Ankara, stretching their supply lines. The Turks checked their advance in the Battle of Sakarya and counter-attacked in the Great Offensive, which expelled Greek forces from Anatolia in the span of three weeks. The war effectively ended with the recapture of Izmir and the Chanak Crisis, prompting the signing of another armistice in Mudanya. The Grand National Assembly in Ankara was recognized as the legitimate Turkish government, which signed the Treaty of Lausanne (July 1923), a treaty more favorable to Turkey than the Sevres Treaty. The Allies evacuated Anatolia and Eastern Thrace, the Ottoman government was overthrown and the monarchy abolished, and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (which remains Turkey's primary legislative body today) declared the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. May 19, 1935: #DOTD: #RIP: T. E. Lawrence, famous as Lawrence of Arabia, British archaeologist, military officer, diplomat, and writer (b. August 16, 1888) #dies in a motorcycle accident in Bovington Camp, Dorset, South West England, aged 46. On May 13 1935, was riding his Brough Superior SS100 motorcycle in Dorset close to his cottage Clouds Hill, near Wareham, just two months after leaving military service.A dip in the road obstructed his view of two boys on their bicycles; he swerved to avoid them, lost control, and was thrown over the handlebars. He died six days later; the location of the crash is marked by a small memorial at the roadside. One of the doctors attending him was neurosurgeon Hugh Cairns, who consequently began a long study of the loss of life by motorcycle dispatch riders through head injuries. His research led to the use of crash helmets by both military and civilian motorcyclists to this day. The Moreton estate borders Bovington Camp where the accident occured, and Lawrence bought his nearby Clouds Hill home from his cousins, the Frampton family. He had been a frequent visitor to their home, Okers Wood House, and had corresponded with Louisa Frampton for years. Lawrence's mother arranged with the Framptons to have his body buried in their family plot in the separate burial ground of St Nicholas' Church, Moreton. The coffin was transported on the Frampton estate's bier. Mourners included Winston Churchill, E. M. Forster, Lady Astor, and Lawrence's youngest brother Arnold. Churchill described him like this: "Lawrence was one of those beings whose pace of life was faster and more intense than what is normal." Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence CB DSO was born Thomas Edward Lawrence in Tremadoc, Carnarvonshire, North Wales, in a house named Gorphwysfa, now known as Snowdon Lodge. He was renowned for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. In 1918, he cooperated with war correspondent Lowell Thomas and his cameraman Harry Chase and had shot a great deal of film and many photographs, which Thomas used in a highly lucrative film that promoted the legend of Lawrence of Arabia and toured the world after the war. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia-a title used for the 1962 film based on his wartime activities. He was born out of wedlock in Tremadog, Wales, in August 1888 to Thomas Chapman (who became, in 1914, Sir Thomas Chapman, 7th Baronet), an Anglo-Irish nobleman from County Westmeath, and Sarah Junner, a Scottish governess (whom Chapman had left his wife and first family in Ireland to cohabit with; they called themselves Mr and Mrs Lawrence). In 1896, the Lawrences moved to Oxford, where their son attended the High School and then from 1907 to 1910 studied History at Jesus College. Between 1910 and 1914 he worked as an archaeologist for the British Museum, chiefly at Carchemish, in Ottoman Syria. Soon after the outbreak of war he volunteered for the British Army and was stationed in Egypt. In 1916, he was sent to Arabia on an intelligence mission and quickly became involved with the Arab Revolt, providing, along with other British officers, liaison to the Arab forces. Working closely with Emir Faisal, a leader of the revolt, he participated in and sometimes led military activities against the Ottoman armed forces, culminating in the capture of Damascus in October 1918. After the war, Lawrence joined the Foreign Office, working with both the British government and with Faisal. In 1922, he retreated from public life and spent the years until 1935 serving as an enlisted man, mostly in the Royal Air Force, with a brief stint in the Army. During this time, he wrote and published his best-known work, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, an autobiographical account of his participation in the Arab Revolt. He also translated books into English and wrote The Mint, which was published posthumously and detailed his time in the Royal Air Force working as an ordinary aircraftman. May 19, 1925: #BOTD: Pol Pot, Cambodian general, Khmer nationalist, Marxist-Leninist revolutionary, dictator, mass murderer, politician and psychopath, 29th Prime Minister of Cambodia (d. April 15, 1998) is #born Saloth Sar (the word sar, Khmer for "white, pale", referencied his comparatively light skin complexion) in the small fishing village of Prek Sbauv, alongside the Sen River in north-eastern Cambodia, outside the city of Kampong Thom, the capital city of Kampong Thom Province, French Indochina (modern Cambodia), lying on the bank of the Steung Saen River. Pot served as the Prime Minister of Democratic Kampuchea from 1976 to 1979. Ideologically a he led the Khmer Rouge group from 1963 until 1997. From 1963 to 1981, he served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea. He was born to a prosperous farmer in Prek Sbauv, French Cambodia, and was educated at some of Cambodia's elite schools. In the 1940s he moved to Paris, France, where he joined the French Communist Party and adopted Marxism-Leninism, particularly as it was presented in the writings of Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong. Returning to Cambodia in 1953, he joined the Marxist-Leninist Khmer Viet Minh organisation in its guerrilla war against King Norodom Sihanouk's newly independent government. Following the Khmer Viet Minh's 1954 retreat into North Vietnam, Pol Pot returned to Phnom Penh, working as a teacher while remaining a central member of the Cambodian Marxist-Leninist movement. In 1959 he helped to convert the movement into the Kampuchean Labour Party, later renamed the Communist Party of Kampuchea, and in 1960 took control of it as party secretary. To avoid state repression, in 1962 he relocated to a Viet Cong encampment in the jungle before visiting Hanoi and Beijing. In 1968, he re-launched the war against Sihanouk. Renaming the country Democratic Kampuchea and seeking to create an agrarian socialist society, Pol Pot's government forcibly relocated the urban population to the countryside to work on collective farms. Those regarded as enemies of the new government were killed. These mass killings, coupled with malnutrition and disease, resulting in genocide that killed between 1.5 to 3 million people. Marxist-Leninists unhappy with Pol Pot's government encouraged Vietnamese intervention. In 1978, the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia, toppling Pol Pot's government in 1979. The Vietnamese installed a rival Marxist-Leninist faction opposed to Pol Pot and renamed the country as the People's Republic of Kampuchea. Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge retreated to a jungle base near the Thai border. Until 1993, they remained part of a coalition internationally recognized as Cambodia's rightful government. The Ta Mok faction placed Pol Pot under house arrest at Choam, Trapeang Prei, Anlong Veng, Oddar Meanchey, Cambodia, where he died in his sleep of a heart attack, aged 72. American freelance journalist Nate Thayer, who was present, claimed that Pol Pot killed himself when he became aware of Ta Mok's plan to hand him over to the United States, saying that "Pol Pot died after ingesting a lethal dose of a combination of Valium and chloroquine". His body was preserved with ice after an improvised embalming with formaldehyde had failed, so that his death could be verified by journalists attending his funeral. Three days later, his second and final wife Mea Son cremated his body on a pyre of tyres and rubbish, utilising traditional Buddhist funerary rites. Before the month of May was out, Mea Son fled to Malaysia with Tep Khunnal, one of Pol Pot's closest advisors, where they married and defected from the Khmer Rouge to the Cambodian government. They live in Phnom Malai, which was once a Khmer Rouge stronghold. Mea Son and her husband have several children of their own. They now live in comfort as they've become owners of an agricultural export company and a farmer's bank. Ironically, they are now the very same class of people their Khmer Rouge regime viciously targeted and brutally murdered. Even so, her husband recently asserted that he has no remorse for his past as a high ranking member of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge themselves continued to face territorial losses to the Cambodian Army and in March 1999 Ta Mok was also captured, and the Khmer Rouge effectively ceased to exist. The combined effects of executions, strenuous working conditions, malnutrition and poor medical care caused the deaths of approximately 25 percent of the Cambodian population. In all, an estimated 1 to 3 million people (out of a population of slightly over 8 million) perished as a result of the policies of his four-year premiership. Soviet engineers believed that Venera 1 failed due to the overheating of a solar-direction sensor. With the help of the British radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, some weak signals from Venera 1 may have been detected in June, but provided no useful data. Venera1 was launched at 00:34:36 UTC atop a Molniya 8K78 (R7) rocket from launch site Baikonur 1/5 at Baikonur Cosmodrome spaceport in southern Kazakhstan. Venera 1 was part of the Soviet Union's Venera Program, a series of space probes developed by the Soviet Union between 1961 and 1984 to gather information about the planet Venus. Ten probes successfully landed on the surface of the planet, including the two Vega program and Venera-Halley probes, while thirteen probes successfully entered the Venusian atmosphere. Due to the extreme surface conditions on Venus, the probes could only survive for a short period on the surface, with times ranging from 23 minutes to two hours. On November 27, 1971, the Mars 2 space probe orbiter released its descent module into the the Martian atmosphere 4.5 hours before reaching the planet Mars; it malfunctioned and crashed, but it is was the first man-made object to reach the surface of the planet. The Mars Program was a series of unmanned spacecraft launched by the Soviet Union between 1960 and 1973. The spacecraft were intended to explore Mars, and included flyby probes, landers and orbiters. Early Mars spacecraft were small, and launched by Molniya rockets. Starting with two failures in 1969, the heavier Proton-K rocket was used to launch larger 5 tonne spacecraft, consisting of an orbiter and a lander to Mars. The orbiter bus design was likely somewhat rushed into service and immature, considering that it performed very unreliably in the Venera variant after 1975. This reliability problem was common to much Soviet space hardware from the late 1960s and early 1970s and was largely corrected with a deliberate policy, implemented in the mid-1970s, of consolidating (or "debugging") existing designs rather than introducing new ones. The names of the "Mars" missions do not need to be translated, as the word "Mars" is spelled and pronounced approximately the same way in English and Russian. In addition to the Mars program, the Soviet Union also sent a probe to Mars as part of the Zond program; Zond 2, however it failed en route. Two more spacecraft were sent during the Phobos program. May 19, 1864: #DOTD: #RIP: Nathaniel Hawthorne, American novelist, dark romantic, and short story writer whose works often focus on history, morality, and religion (b. July 4, 1804) #dies in his sleep in Plymouth, New Hampshire aged 59. Former American President Franklin Pierce sent a telegram to Elizabeth Peabody asking her to inform her sister, Mrs. Sophia Hawthorne in person. Mrs. Hawthorne was too saddened by the news to handle the funeral arrangements herself. Hawthorne's son Julian, a freshman at Harvard College, learned of his father's death the next day; coincidentally, he was initiated into the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity on the same day by being blindfolded and placed in a coffin. Longfellow wrote a tribute poem to Hawthorne published in 1866 called "The Bells of Lynn". Hawthorne was buried on what is now known as "Authors' Ridge" in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, Massachusetts. Pallbearers included Longfellow, Emerson, Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., James T. Fields, and Edwin Percy Whipple. Emerson wrote of the funeral: "I thought there was a tragic element in the event, that might be more fully rendered -- in the painful solitude of the man, which, I suppose, could no longer be endured, & he died of it." His wife Sophia and daughter Una were originally buried in England. However, in June 2006, they were reinterred in plots adjacent to Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born Nathaniel Hathorne in Salem, Massachusetts, to Nathaniel Hathorne and the former Elizabeth Clarke Manning. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. He published his first work in 1828, the novel Fanshawe; he later tried to suppress it, feeling that it was not equal to the standard of his later work. He published several short stories in periodicals, which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at the Boston Custom House and joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment as consul took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to Concord in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, and was survived by his wife and their three children. Much of Hawthorne's writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral metaphors with an anti-Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. His published works include novels, short stories, and a biography of his college friend Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States. May 19, 1802: Awards And Decorations: Awards And Decorations Of The French Armed Forces: Highest Military Awards For Gallantry: Highest Military Awards For Gallantry Of The French Armed Forces: The Legion Of Honour (French: Legion D'Honneur) (The Legion Of Honor): -- Napoleon Bonaparte founds The Royal Order Of The Legion Of Honour (French: Ordre Royal De La Legion D'Honneur), now known as The Legion Of Honour (The Legion Of Honor), the highest French order of merit for military and civil merits, an award since retained, with occasional slight alterations, by all later French governments and regimes. During the French Revolution, all of the French orders of chivalry were abolished and replaced with Weapons of Honour. It was the wish of Napoleon Bonaparte, the First Consul, to create a reward to commend civilians and soldiers. From this wish was instituted a Legion d'honneur, a body of men that was not an order of chivalry, for Napoleon believed that France wanted a recognition of merit rather than a new system of nobility. However, the Legion d'honneur did use the organization of the old French orders of chivalry, for example, the Ordre de Saint-Louis. The insignia of the Legion d'honneur bear a resemblance to those of the Ordre de Saint-Louis, which also used a red ribbon. Napoleon originally created this award to ensure political loyalty. The organization would be used as a facade to give political favours, gifts, and concessions. The Legion D'Honneur was loosely patterned after a Roman legion, with legionaries, officers, commanders, regional "cohorts" and a grand council. The highest rank was not a Grand Cross but a Grand Aigle (Grand Eagle), a rank that wore the insignia common to a Grand Cross. The members were paid generously upon the bestowal of the award. Napoleon famously declared, "You call these baubles, well, it is with baubles that men are led... Do you think that you would be able to make men fight by reasoning£ Never. That is good only for the scholar in his study. The soldier needs glory, distinctions, rewards." This has been often quoted as "It is with such baubles that men are led." Napoleon was also occasionally noted after a battle to ask who the bravest man in a regiment was, and upon the regiment declaring the individual, the Emperor would take the Legion d'Honneur of his own coat and pin it on the chest of the man. The order was the first modern order of merit. Under the monarchy, its orders had often limited to Roman Catholics, all knights had to be noblemen, and military decorations were restricted to officers. The Legion d'honneur, however, was open to men of all ranks and professions; only merit or bravery counted. The new legionnaire had to be sworn into the Legion D'Honneur. All previous orders were Christian, or shared a clear Christian background, whereas the Legion D'Honneur is a secular institution. The motto of The Legion Of Honor is Honneur Et Patrie ("Honour And Fatherland"), and its seat is the Palais de la Legion d'Honneur next to the Musee d'Orsay, on the left bank of the Seine in Paris. May 19, 1891: #BOTD: #HBD! Oswald Boelcke, German captain, Pour le Merite recipient World War I flying ace known as "The Father Of Air Fighting Tactics" (d. October 28, 1916) is #born in Giebichenstein, Province of Saxony, Prussia; near Halle (Saale) (now a city district of Halle, Germany). He was the first person to formalize rules of air fighting, which he presented as the Dicta Boelcke, or The Dicta of Boelcke. Boelcke was credited with 40 aerial combat victories, and was one of the most influential patrol leaders and tacticians of the early years of air combat. Boelcke is honored as the father of the German fighter air force. The German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron) had been taught by Boelcke. Boelcke fulfilled his childhood dream of a military career by joining the Imperial German Army in July 1912. He followed his interest in aviation, learning to fly as World War I began. After duty as an observer during 1914, he became one of the original fighter pilots during 1915. He and Max Immelmann were the first German fighter pilots awarded the Pour le Merite. When Immelmann was killed in combat in June 1916, the German high command grounded Boelcke after his 19th victory. During his month's forced grounding, he was tasked to help transform the Army's Fliegertruppe (Flying Troops) air arm into the Luftstreitkrafte (Air Force) by October 1916. His innovative turn of mind codified his combat experiences into the first ever manual of fighter tactics distributed to an air force, the Dicta Boelcke. The Dicta promulgated axioms for individual pilot success, as well as a requirement for teamwork directed by a formation's leader. Present day tactics manuals stem from the Dicta. After a month's holiday leave spent on a military inspection tour of Turkish facilities, Boelcke was picked to lead one of Germany's first fighter squadrons, Jagdstaffel 2 (Fighter Squadron 2, also known as Jasta 2, Jagdstaffel Zwei in full, and Jasta Boelcke). By the end of the war, this squadron had 25 aces in its ranks, and four of its members became generals during World War II. During the short time before his death, Boelcke became the world's leading fighter pilot, scoring 21 more victories while commanding Jagdstaffel 2. Oswald Boelcke died when his Fokker Eindecker fighter plane collided in mid-air with that of his fellow Jagdstaffel 2 airman and best friend Erwin Boehme. Although the crash seemed survivable, Boelcke was not wearing his crash helmet, nor was his safety belt fastened. He died of a fractured skull. Boehme returned to base and overturned while landing, blanking the accident from his mind in his distress. He lamented, "Destiny is generally cruelly stupid in her choices..." but he was exonerated by an enquiry. Pilots from Jagdstaffel 2 rushed forward to the artillery position where Boelcke had crashed, hoping he was still alive. The gunners handed over his body to them. Despite Boelcke being Protestant, his memorial service was held in the Catholic Cambrai Cathedral on 31 October. Among the many wreaths, there was one from British Captain R. E. Wilson, whom Boelcke had shot down on September 2 and whom Boelcke had hosted in the squadron mess before returning the British flier to captivity as a POW; the wreath was also from three of Wilson's fellow prisoners; its ribbon was addressed to "The opponent we admired and esteemed so highly". Another wreath of British origin had been air dropped at the authorization of the Royal Flying Corps; it read "To the memory of Captain Boelcke, our brave and chivalrous opponent". Rupprecht, Crown Prince of Bavaria attended the ceremony and two generals spoke at the service. Richthofen preceded the coffin from the cathedral, displaying Boelcke's decorations. May 19, 1848: The Mexican-American War (The Mexican War): The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Spanish: Tratado De Guadalupe Hidalgo) (The Treaty Of Peace, Friendship, Limits, And Settlement Between The United States Of America And The United Mexican States): -- The end of The Mexican-American War occurs when Mexico ratifies The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which for the payment by the United States 15M USD, and a further 5M USD American payment to pay off the claims of American citizens against Mexico, ceded the Rio Grande as a boundary for Texas, and gave the United States land that became, between 1850 and 1912, all or part of nine states: all of California (1850), Nevada (1864), Utah (1896) and Arizona (1912), as well as, depending upon interpretation, the entire state of Texas (1845), which then included part of Kansas (1861), Colorado (1876), Oklahoma (1907), and New Mexico (1912). Mexicans in those annexed areas had the choice of relocating to within Mexico's new boundaries or receiving American citizenship with full civil rights. The U.S. Senate advised and consented to ratification of the treaty by a vote of 38-14. The opponents of this treaty were led by the Whigs, who had opposed the war and rejected manifest destiny in general, and rejected this expansion in particular. The amount of land gained by the United States from Mexico was further increased as a result of the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, which ceded parts of present-day southern Arizona and New Mexico to the United States. With the defeat of its army and the fall of its capital in September 1847, Mexico entered into negotiations with the U.S. peace envoy, Nicholas Trist, to end the war. On the Mexican side, there were factions that did not concede defeat or seek to engage in negotiations. The Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on February 2, 1848, in the Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo (now a neighborhood of Mexico City), and was ratified by the United States on March 10 and by Mexico on May 19. The ratifications were exchanged on May 30, and the treaty was proclaimed on July 4, 1848. On May 11, 1846: The Mexican-American War began when American President James K. Polk asked for and received a Declaration of War against Mexico, beginning an armed conflict between the United States of America and the United Mexican States (Mexico) from 1846 to 1848. It followed in the wake of the 1845 American annexation of the independent Republic of Texas, which Mexico still considered its northeastern province and a part of its territory after its de facto secession in the 1836 Texas Revolution a decade earlier. In the decades preceding the war, Native American raids in Mexico's sparsely settled north prompted the Mexican government to sponsor migration from the United States to the Mexican province of Texas to create a buffer. However, the newly named "Texians" revolted against the Mexican government of President/dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who had usurped the Mexican Constitution of 1824, in the subsequent 1836 Texas Revolution, creating a republic not recognized by Mexico, which still claimed it as part of its national territory. In 1845, the Texan Republic agreed to an offer of annexation by the U.S. Congress and became the 28th state in the Union on December 29 that year. In 1845, newly elected U.S. President James K. Polk made a proposition to the Mexican government to purchase the disputed lands between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande river further south. When that offer was rejected, President Polk moved U.S. troops commanded by Major General Zachary Taylor further south into the disputed territory. Mexican forces attacked an American Army outpost ("Thornton Affair") in the occupied territory, killing 12 U.S. soldiers and capturing 52. These same Mexican troops later laid siege to an American fort along the Rio Grande. Polk cited this attack as an invasion of U.S. territory and requested that the Congress declare war. U.S. forces quickly occupied the capital town of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico along the upper Rio Grande and the Pacific coast territory province of Alta California (Upper California). They then invaded to the south into parts of central Mexico (modern-day northeastern Mexico and northwest Mexico). Meanwhile, the Pacific Squadron of the United States Navy conducted a blockade and took control of several garrisons on the Pacific coast farther south in lower Baja California Territory. The U.S. Army, under the command of Major General Winfield Scott, after several fierce battles of stiff resistance from the Mexican Army outside of the capital, Mexico City, eventually captured the city, having marched west from the port of Veracruz, where the Americans staged their first amphibious landing on the Gulf of Mexico coast. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, forced onto the remnant Mexican government, ended the war and specified its major consequence, the Mexican Cession of the northern territories of Alta California and Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico to the United States. The U.S. agreed to pay 15M USD compensation for the physical damage of the war. In addition, the United States assumed 3.25M USD of debt already owed earlier by the Mexican government to U.S. citizens. Mexico had lost over one-third of its original territory from its 1821 independence. At first, the war was highly controversial in the United States, with the Whig Party, anti-imperialists, and anti-slavery elements strongly opposing. Critics in the United States pointed to the heavy casualties suffered by U.S. forces compared to earlier American wars, and the conflict's high monetary cost. The war intensified the debate over slavery in the United States, contributing to bitter debates that culminated in the American Civil War (1861-1865). In Mexico, the war came in the middle of continued domestic political turmoil, which increased into chaos during the conflict. The military defeat and loss of territory was a disastrous blow. May 19, 1962: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Presidency Of John F. Kennedy: Happy Birthday, Mr. President: -- A 45th birthday salute to U.S. President John F. Kennedy takes place at Madison Square Garden, New York City. The highlight is Marilyn Monroe's rendition of "Happy Birthday". Now known as "Happy Birthday, Mr. President", the song was sung by Monroe 10 days before the actual May 29 date of Kennedy's birthday. The event was co-hosted by Arthur B. Krim and Anna M. Rosenberg, who sat next to the President during the star-studded event. Monroe sang the traditional "Happy Birthday to You" lyrics in a sultry, intimate voice, with "Mr. President" inserted as Kennedy's name. She continued the song with a snippet from the classic song, "Thanks for the Memory", for which she had written new lyrics specifically aimed at Kennedy. Monroe's appearance cost ultimately cost Monroe her contract with 20th Century Fox. Monroe attended the event during the production of Something's Got to Give, an unfinished American feature film shot in 1962, directed by George Cukor for 20th Century Fox and starring Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin and Cyd Charisse. Because of Monroe performance, she received a hand-delivered note stating that she had violated her contract with 20th Century Fox, despite the fact that she had received a round of permission from the film's producer Henry Weinstein and by Fox executives. Two weeks later, Monroe phoned Henry Weinstein to inform him that she would not be on set that day once again. She had a flare-up of the sinusitis, and her temperature had reached 100 dg F. At a studio meeting, Cukor strongly endorsed her dismissal, and she was fired from the project on June 8, 1962. May 19, 1963: Civil Rights Movements: The American Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968): Anti-Black Racism In The United States: The Birmingham Campaign (The Birmingham Movement, The Birmingham Confrontation): The Letter From Birmingham Jail (The Letter From Birmingham City Jail, The Negro Is Your Brother): -- The New York Post Sunday Magazine publishes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter From Birmingham Jail, which he penned while incarcerated in Birmingham, Alabama during the Birmingham Campaign. Also known as the Letter from Birmingham City Jail and The Negro Is Your Brother, is an open letter written to defend the strategy of nonviolent resistance to racism. It says that people have a moral responsibility to break unjust laws and to take direct action rather than waiting potentially forever for justice to come through the courts. Responding to being referred to as an "outsider," King writes, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". The letter was widely published, and became an important text for the American Civil Rights Movement. On May 11, 1963, The Birmingham Riot Of 1963 occured when racist bombings in Birmingham, Alabama designed to disrupt nonviolence in the Birmingham campaign provoked riots that precipitated a crisis involving federal troops. The bombings targeted black leaders of the Birmingham campaign, a mass protest for racial justice. The places bombed were the parsonage of Rev. A. D. King, brother of Martin Luther King, Jr., and a motel owned by A. G. Gaston, where King and others organizing the campaign had stayed. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leader of the Birmingham civil rights campaign which had been conducted that spring, with large, nonviolent demonstrations resulting in the mass arrest of schoolchildren who were trying to take a walk to Birmingham City Hall to talk to the mayor about segregation. Witnesses saw Birmingham police place bombs at the parsonage, which was partially destroyed. All the family escaped. It was believed that the bombings were most likely planned and carried out by members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Since the 1950s, KKK members in Birmingham had used bombings against civil rights leaders and blacks who started to move into tradtionally white neighborhoods. After the attacks, blacks in the area began to riot because of the police involvement, and were repressed severely by the Birmingham Police Department. The United States government intervened with federal troops for the first time to control violence during a civil rights related riot. It was also the first time the government had used military troops independently of enforcing a court injunction, an action was considered controversial by Governor George Wallace and other Alabama whites. The bombings and police response were a pivotal event that contributed to President Kennedy's decision to propose civil rights legislation to achieve relief of injustice. It was ultimately passed under President Lyndon B. Johnson as the Civil Rights Act Of 1964. Coleman Hawkins was born Coleman Randolph Hawkins in Saint Joseph, Missouri and named after his mother Cordelia's maiden name. There were tenor saxophone players before him, but the instrument was not an acknowledged jazz horn until him. While Hawk is strongly associated with the swing music and big band era, he had a role in the development of bebop in the 1940s. Fellow saxophonist Lester Young, known as "Pres", commented in a 1959 interview with The Jazz Review: "As far as I'm concerned, I think Coleman Hawkins was 'the President' first, right£ As far as myself, I think I'm the second one." Pete Townshend, English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalistand guitarist ,best known for his more than 50-year association with the rock band The Who, as co-founder and leader, principal songwriter, guitarist and secondary lead vocalist, is #born Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend at the Chiswick Hospital, Netheravon Road, Chiswick, West London, England. He came from a musical family: his father, Cliff Townshend, was a professional alto saxophonist in the Royal Air Force's dance band the Squadronaires and his mother, Betty (nee Dennis), was a singer with the Sydney Torch and Les Douglass Orchestras. The Townshends had a volatile marriage, as both drank heavily and possessed fiery tempers. Cliff Townshend was often away from his family touring with his band while Betty carried on affairs with other men. The two split when Townshend was a toddler and he was sent to live with his maternal grandmother Emma Dennis, whom Pete later described as "clinically insane". The two-year separation ended when Cliff and Betty purchased a house together on Woodgrange Avenue in middle-class Acton, and the young Pete was happily reunited with his parents. His neighbourhood was one-third Polish, and a devout Jewish family upstairs shared their housing with them and cooking with them - many of his father's closest friends were Jewish. Townshend says he did not have many friends growing up, so he spent much of his boyhood reading adventure novels like Gulliver's Travels and Treasure Island. He enjoyed his family's frequent excursions to the seaside and the Isle of Man. It was on one of these trips in the summer of 1956 that he repeatedly watched the 1956 film Rock Around the Clock, sparking his fascination with American rock and roll. Not long thereafter, he went to see Bill Haley perform in London, Townshend's first concert. The Who is considered to be one of the most important and influential rock bands of the 20th century. Townshend has written more than 100 songs for 12 The Who studio albums. These include concept albums, the rock operas Tommy and Quadrophenia, plus popular rock radio staples such as Who's Next; as well as dozens more that appeared as non-album singles, bonus tracks on reissues, and tracks on rarities compilations such as Odds & Sods (1974). Henry's marriage to her, and her subsequent execution by beheading, made her a key figure in the political and religious upheaval that was the start of the English Reformation. Anne was the daughter of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Howard, and was educated in the Netherlands and France, largely as a maid of honour to Queen Claude of France. Anne returned to England in early 1522, to marry her Irish cousin James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormond; the marriage plans were broken off, and instead she secured a post at court as maid of honour to Henry VIII's wife, Catherine Of Aragon. Early in 1523 Anne was secretly betrothed to Henry Percy, son of the 5th Earl of Northumberland, but the betrothal was broken off when Percy's father refused to support their engagement. Cardinal Wolsey refused the match in January 1524 and Anne was sent back home to Hever Castle. In February or March 1526, Henry VIII began his pursuit of Anne. She resisted his attempts to seduce her, refusing to become his mistress, which her sister Mary had been. It soon became the one absorbing object of Henry's desires to annul his marriage to Catherine Of Aragon so he would be free to marry Anne. When it became clear that Pope Clement VII would not annul the marriage, the breaking of the Catholic Church's power in England began. In 1532, Henry granted Anne the Marquessate of Pembroke. Henry and Anne formally married on 25 January 1533, after a secret wedding on 14 November 1532. On 23 May 1533, newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer declared Henry and Catherine's marriage null and void; five days later, he declared Henry and Anne's marriage valid. Shortly afterwards, the Pope decreed sentences of excommunication against Henry and Cranmer. As a result of this marriage and these excommunications, the first break between the Church of England and Rome took place and the Church of England was brought under the King's control. Anne was crowned Queen Of England on June 1, 1533. On September 7, she gave birth to the future Queen Elizabeth I. Henry was disappointed to have a daughter rather than a son but hoped a son would follow and professed to love Elizabeth. Anne subsequently had three miscarriages, and by March 1536, Henry was courting Jane Seymour. In order to marry Jane Seymour, Henry had to find reasons to end the marriage to Anne. Henry VIII had Anne investigated for high treason in April 1536. On 2 May she was arrested and sent to the Tower of London, where she was tried before a jury of peers - which included Henry Percy, her former betrothed, and her own uncle, Thomas Howard - and found guilty on 15 May. She was beheaded four days later. Modern historians view the charges against her, which included adultery, incest and plotting to kill the king, as unconvincing. Some say that Anne was accused of witchcraft but the indictments make no mention of this charge. After the coronation of her daughter, Elizabeth, Anne was venerated as a martyr and heroine of the English Reformation, particularly through the works of John Foxe. Over the centuries, she has inspired, or been mentioned, in many artistic and cultural works and thereby retained her hold on the popular imagination. She has been called "the most influential and important queen consort England has ever had", as she provided the occasion for Henry VIII to annul his marriage to Catherine Of Aragon and declare the English church's independence from Rome. Elizabeth was cautious, ordering an inquiry into the conduct of the confederate lords and the question of whether Mary was guilty of Darnley's murder. In mid-July 1568, English authorities moved Mary to Bolton Castle, because it was farther from the Scottish border but not too close to London. Mary's clothes, sent from Loch Leven Castle, arrived on July 20. A commission of inquiry, or conference, as it was known, was held in York and later Westminster between October 1568 and January 1569. May 19, 1921: #BOTD: #HBD! Yuri Kochiyama (formerly Mary Yuriko Nakahara), controversial Japanese American (Nissei) and African American civil rights activist influenced by her Japanese-American family's experience in an American internment camp, her association with Malcolm X, and her Maoist beliefs (d. June 1, 2014) is #born Kochiyama Yuriko in San Pedro, California. She advocated for many causes, including black separatism, the anti-war movement, reparations for Japanese-American internees, and the rights of people imprisoned by the U.S. government for violent offenses whom she considered to be "political prisoners". She was present at the assassination of Malcolm X on February 21, 1965 at the Audubon Ballroom in Washington Heights, New York City, and held him in her arms as he lay dying - a famous photo appeared in Life capturing that moment. Kochiyama became a mentor to the radical end of the Asian American movement that grew during and after the Vietnam War protests. Yuri Kochiyama died at the age of 93 in Berkeley, California. She is buried at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Renee Asherson, English actress who spent much of her theatrical career in Shakespearean plays, appearing at such venues as the Old Vic, the Liverpool Playhouse, and the Westminster Theatre (d. October 30, 2014) is #born Dorothy Renee Ascherson in Kensington, London, the younger daughter of shipowner Charles Stephen Ascherson (1877-1945) and Dorothy Lilian (nee Wiseman; 1881-1975). Her father was of German-Jewish extraction. She was brought up in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, as well as Switzerland and Anjou. She later trained for the stage at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Asherson made her first stage appearance on October 17, 1935, aged 20, as a walk-on in John Gielgud's production of Romeo and Juliet, though she was also the second understudy for Juliet. It was the production in which Gielgud and Laurence Olivier alternated the roles of Romeo and Mercutio. For eighteen months from 1937 through 1938, Asherson was a member of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre company. She first appeared at The Old Vic in May 1940 as Iris in The Tempest. Asherson toured with the Old Vic company from 1940 through 1941 in the roles of Kate Hardcastle in She Stoops to Conquer, Maria in Twelfth Night, Nerissa in The Merchant of Venice, and Blanche in King John. Asherson appeared at the New Theatre as Blanche in July 1941 before resuming her tour with the Old Vic company. On film, her first major film appearance was in The Way Ahead (1944). An early lead role for Asherson was as King Henry V's love interest, Princess Katherine, in Laurence Olivier's film of Shakespeare's play Henry V. Donat and Asherson reprised their stage roles in The Cure for Love (1949) in Donat's only film as director. During its production, the couple fell in love. They frequently appeared together in later films, such as The Magic Box (1951). In 1945 she appeared in The Way to the Stars as Iris Winterton, the love interest of Peter Penrose (John Mills). Her last film appearance was as the unnamed old woman in the haunted house thriller The Others (2001). Asherson appeared at other venues. It was at the Westminster Theatre that she gained especially good notices for her appearance in Walter Greenwood's The Cure for Love in 1945 with Robert Donat. Laurence Olivier wanted her to join his company at The Old Vic, but she chose to continue working with Donat instead. At the Aldwych Theatre, she played Beatrice to Donat's Benedict in Much Ado About Nothing in 1947 and Stella in the first London production of A Streetcar Named Desire in 1949. The latter production was directed by Olivier, with Vivien Leigh as Blanche. She also performed at the Apollo Theatre in 1956, the Criterion Theatre also in 1956, St Martin's Theatre in 1962, the Savoy Theatre in 1963 and 1977 and the York Theatre Royal in 1973 and 1976. In 1976, she played the tragic Miss Gailey over seven episodes of ATV's epic dramatisation of Arnold Bennett's "Clayhanger" opposite Janet Suzman and Denis Quilley. In 1978, she portrayed Mother Ancilla in the Armchair Thriller adaptation of the Antonia Fraser novel Quiet as a Nun, and appeared as Mrs Wainwright in the 1979 TV miniseries A Man Called Intrepid. In 1981, Asherson played the role of Sylvia Ashburton in the first season and for eight episodes of Tenko. She played Dora Bunner in the 1985 Miss Marple episode, A Murder Is Announced. As the character Emily Simpson, she was the first victim to die in the TV series Midsomer Murders ('The Killings at Badger's Drift'; S1/01,1997). In 1953 she moved to 8 The Grove, Highgate upon her marriage to fellow actor Robert Donat, separating before his death five years later. She never remarried. Renee Asherson died in Primrose Hill, London, England, aged 99. She is buried in East Finchley Cemetery and Crematorium in East Finchley, Greater London, England.
