Roy Chapman Andrews, American explorer, adventurer, naturalist and paleontologist and field worker, who led the first expeditions through the politically disturbed China of the early 20th century into the Gobi Desert and Mongolia in search for artifacts of dinosaurs and ancient man, and who became the director of the American Museum of Natural History (January 26, 1884 – March 11, 1960) was born in Beloit, Wisconsin. His expeditions made important discoveries and brought the first-known fossil dinosaur eggs to the museum, and his popular writings about his adventures made him famous. It has been alleged that Andrews is the inspiration for the movie character of Indiana Jones, the title character and protagonist of George Lucas' Indiana Jones film franchise; despite this, neither George Lucas nor the other creators of the films have confirmed these allegations, and other archaeologist explorers such as Colonel Percy Fawcett have been suggested. Roy Chapman Andrews died of heart failure at Peninsula Community Hospital in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California, aged 76. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in his hometown of Beloit.
