THE CONVAIR B-36 PEACEMAKER (Color, 1986, 45 Minutes.)
Archival color and black and white film chronicling the history of the largest mass produced propellor driven aircraft ever made, which nonetheless came to supplement these piston engines with jet engines, and which achieved its manifold place in history as the first unrefueled intercontinental bomber, the longest wingspanned combat aircraft, the only pusher-propellor bomber ever produced, and the aircraft that set the standard for all the intercontinental bombers that followed it in range and payload, from its inception through its early testing and manufacture to its deployment as the nuclear-armed backbone of the U. S. Strategic Air Command (Australian Version).
THE CONVAIR B-36 PEACEMAKER (Color, 1987, 45 Minutes.)
American English version of the above.
August 8, 1946: First flight of the Convair B-36 "Peacemaker", the world's first mass-produced nuclear weapon delivery vehicle, the heaviest mass-produced piston-engined aircraft, with the longest wingspan of any military aircraft at 230 feet, and with a range of 10,000 mi and a maximum payload of 87,200 lb, the B-36 was the first aircraft capable of intercontinental flight without refuelling. It was operated solely by the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1949 to 1959. The B-36 was the first bomber capable of delivering any of the nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal from inside its four bomb bays without aircraft modifications. Entering service in 1948, the B-36 was the primary nuclear weapons delivery vehicle of Strategic Air Command (SAC) until it was replaced by the jet-powered Boeing B-52 Stratofortress beginning in 1955. All but five examples were scrapped.
