An Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) is any aerial phenomenon that cannot be immediately identified or explained. Most UFOs are identified or investigated as conventional objects or phenomena. The term is widely used for claimed observations of extraterrestrial spacecraft, and was coined as an anacronym by Project Blue Book project head Edward J. Ruppelt. Another widely used term for the phenomenon is "flying saucer." Studies and investigations have been conducted by various governments worldwide, along with private individuals and organizations. In the United States, studies began in the late 1940s and have included Project Grudge, Project Sign and Project Blue Book. The latter was ended in 1969-70 after the Condon Committee officially concluded that the subject failed to merit further study. However, an unpublicized study named the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was funded by the U.S. government from 2007-2012, and a successor program named the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force is currently operational. Unidentified lights and flying objects have been reported in the skies for much of human history. The topic of UFO's has been, and is currently, popular in worldwide culture in fictional movies, television and other media. UFO reports are also the subject of continuing debate and news reporting.

Extraterrestrial Life is hypothetical life which may occur outside Earth and which did not originate on Earth. Such life might range from simple prokaryotes (or comparable life forms) to intelligent beings and even sapient beings, possibly bringing forth civilizations which might be far more advanced than humanity. The Drake equation speculates about the existence of sapient life elsewhere in the universe. The science of extraterrestrial life in all its forms is known as astrobiology. Since the mid-20th century, active ongoing research has taken place to look for signs of extraterrestrial life. This encompasses a search for current and historic extraterrestrial life, and a narrower search for extraterrestrial intelligent life. Depending on the category of search, methods range from the analysis of telescope and specimen data to radios used to detect and send communication signals. The concept of extraterrestrial life, and particularly extraterrestrial intelligence, has had a major cultural impact, chiefly in works of science fiction. Over the years, science fiction communicated scientific ideas, imagined a wide range of possibilities, and influenced public interest in and perspectives of extraterrestrial life. One shared space is the debate over the wisdom of attempting communication with extraterrestrial intelligence. Some encourage aggressive methods to try for contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. Others—citing the tendency of technologically advanced human societies to enslave or wipe out less advanced societies—argue that it may be dangerous to actively call attention to Earth.

Ancient Aliens, also known as Ancient Astronauts, refers to the historical record of intelligent extraterrestrial beings who have been recorded visiting Earth and made contact with humans in antiquity and prehistoric times. Arthur C. Clarke was a firm believer of the hypothesis that key events recorded in the both the Old and New Testaments were records of contact with alien beings and their spacecraft, a belief that strongly influenced his science fiction. This contact influenced the development of modern cultures, technologies, religions, and human biology. A common position is that many deities of the world's religions refer to extraterrestrial beings, and that their advanced technologies were interpreted as evidence of their divine status by early humans While it is a common belief that the idea of ancient astronauts is not taken seriously by academics, even Albert Einstein believed in them, and would resort to ancient texts of the world's religions when he met with physics problems he believed might have the answers. Other well-known ancient astronauts proponents in the latter half of the 20th century who have written numerous books or appear regularly in mass media, some of whom are spurious, some of whom are legitimate, include Erich von Daniken, Zecharia Sitchin, Robert K. G. Temple, Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, Michael Cremo, David Hatcher Childress, Peter Kolosimo, and Mauro Biglino.
