Two outstanding retrospectives into the light and dark of Richard Burton, a man who rose from an obscure Welsh mining town to the heights of fame and fortune by virtue of his acting genius and in spite of his personal shortcomings. Together they make for a sympathetic but nonetheless critical analysis of the journey of a man who achieved brilliantly what few ever could in like circumstances.
Richard Burton, Welsh-Swiss actor, singer and producer (November 10, 1925 - August 5, 1984) was born Richard Walter Jenkins Jr. in Pontrhydyfen, South Wales. The son of a coal miner, he came to be regarded as one of the greatest acting talents of his day, noted for his mellifluous baritone voice, although he never received an Oscar and was never knighted. He led a tempestuous personal life, highlighted by twice marrying actress Elizabeth Taylor. He died at age 58 of a cerebral hemorrhage. Burton established himself as a formidable Shakespearean actor in the 1950s, and he gave a memorable performance of Hamlet in 1964. He was called "the natural successor to Olivier" by critic and dramaturge Kenneth Tynan. An alcoholic, Burton' failure to live up to those expectations disappointed critics and colleagues and fueled his legend as a great thespian wastrel. Burton was nominated for an Academy Award seven times, but never won. He was a recipient of BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Tony Awards for Best Actor. In the mid-1960s, Burton ascended into the ranks of the top box office stars, and by the late 1960s was one of the highest-paid actors in the world, receiving fees of 1M USD or more plus a share of the gross receipts. Burton remains closely associated in the public consciousness with his second wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor. The couple' turbulent relationship was rarely out of the news. Richard Burton died at age 58 from a brain hemorrhage at his home in Celigny, Geneva, Switzerland, where he was later buried. Although his death was sudden, his health had been declining for several years, and he suffered from constant and severe neck pain, a symptom associated with intracerebral hemorrhage, also known as cerebral bleed. As early as March 1970, he had been warned that his liver was enlarged, and he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and kidney disease in April 1981. In a tribute to his Welsh roots, Burton was buried in a red suit and with a copy of Dylan Thomas' poems. He and Elizabeth Taylor had discussed being buried together; his widow Sally Hay Burton purchased the plot next to Burton's and erected a large headstone across both, presumably to prevent Taylor from being buried there. For his contributions to cinema, Burton has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. For his contributions to theater, Burton was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.
