Raymond Massey, Canadian-American actor and playwright (August 30, 1896 - July 29, 1983) was born Raymond Hart Massey in Toronto, Ontario, the son of Anna (née Vincent), who was American-born, and Chester Daniel Massey, the wealthy owner of the Massey-Harris Tractor Company. He was the grandson of businessman Hart Massey and great-grandson of founder Daniel Massey. He was known for his commanding, stage-trained voice. He was the leading Canadian actor of his time, and was the grand scion of the founder of the Massey-Harris Tractor Company. He appeared in many high-profile films such as The Scarlet Pimpernel, Things To Come, Fire Over England, The Prisonder of Zenda, Sante Fe Trail, Desperate Journey, God Is My Co-Pilot, Mourning Becomes Electra, The Fountainhead, Chain Lightning, East of Eden, Seven Angry Men, The Naked And The Dead. For his lead role in Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940), Massey was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was also well known for playing Dr. Gillespie in the NBC television series Dr. Kildare (1961-1966). His high-profile estrangement and divorce from his second wife Adrianne Allen was the inspiration for Ruth Gordon's and Garson Kanin's script for the film Adam's Rib (1949), starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, and indeed Massey married the lawyer who represented him in court, Dorothy Whitney, while his then former wife, Allen, married the opposing lawyer, William Dwight Whitney.
