Hugh Masekela, nicknamed "The Father Of South African Jazz", Black South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer and composer who had a number-one US pop hit in 1968 with his version of "Grazing in the Grass" (April 4, 1939 - January 23, 2018) was born Hugh Ramapolo Masekela in the township of KwaGuqa in Witbank (now called Emalahleni), Union Of South Africa. Masekela was known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as "Soweto Blues" and "Bring Him Back Home". Hugh Masekela died in the early morning in Johannesburg, South Africa of prostate cancer, aged 78. He is buried at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.

Quilapayún are a folk music group from Chile and among the longest lasting and most influential ambassadors of the Nueva Canción Chilena movement and genre. Formed during the mid-1960s, the group became inseparable with the revolution that occurred in the popular music of the country under the Popular Unity Government of Salvador Allende.

Paquito D'Rivera, born Francisco de Jesús Rivera Figueras on June 4, 1948, is a Cuban-American alto saxophonist, clarinetist and composer. He was a member of the Cuban songo band Irakere and, since the 1980s, he has established himself as a bandleader in the United States. His smooth saxophone tone and his frequent combination of Latin jazz and classical music have become his trademarks.
