America's space shuttle fleet has long been reputed to have had numerous contacts with unidentified flying objects in outer space; this fictional film, very loosely based on particular aspects of UFO "crashed saucer" lore, imagines the shuttle as having exactly such an experience a full year before any manned shuttle flew in space. As this story goes, a satellite launched from the shuttle crashes with a UFO in space, bringing the unknown craft hurtling down to the ground and causing the drama that unfolds. Come on this fanciful thriller of an adventure as astronauts and doctors, generals and presidents, security agents and scientists all attempt to locate this crashed spacecraft, deal with it, understand it, prove its existence, and then attempt to deny - and possibly even destroy - its very existence.

Hangar 18 is a 1980 American science fiction action film directed by James L. Conway and written by Ken Pettus, from a story by Thomas C. Chapman and Conway. It stars Darren McGavin, Robert Vaughn, Gary Collins, James Hampton and Pamela Bellwood. Hangar 18 was released in the United States in July 1980, and in Ireland on March 13, 1981. It was one of the very few American films to be shown theatrically in the Soviet Union, and was also broadcast on the Soviet television channel Programme One, premiering on January 1, 1982. Due to the limited number of science fiction and action films available to the Soviet public, Hangar 18 became quite popular with the youth of the country.
