Bill Dana, American comedian, actor, and screenwriter (October 5, 1924 - June 15, 2017) was born William Szathmary in Quincy, Massachusetts. He often appeared on television shows such as The Steve Allen Show and The Ed Sullivan Show, frequently in the guise of a heavily accented Bolivian character named José Jiménez. Dana often portrayed the Jiménez character as an astronaut, becoming thereby the unofficial mascot of the U.S. manned space program generally, of the "Mercury 7" astronauts of Project Mercury particularly who made him an unofficial eighth Mercury astronaut, and Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, especially.
