For years the mythos of who created free form radio did not include the name of the man we now know was its father, Jim Hawthorne. A buttoned-down demeanor belied the madness of the audio space he created around him during radio shows first broadcast in California beginning in 1947. He interacted with disembodied voices from phonograph players playing random record excerpts, imaginary friends such as Scrappy the friendly piece of paper, and with his sponsor's commercials for whom speeding them up and slowing them down was what was in store for them if they didn't behave themselves. To any & all for whom media history in general and radio history in particular is important, this DVD featuring this broadcasting genius is a must-have to begin one's journey!

My own journey began in July of 2003, when as in years before and since I was a contributor of broadcast audio to the venerable WFMU radio show series "Aircheck". A listener named Gary Levine had submitted a broadcast to the show, and when I heard it live on internet radio on July 3rd, I was astounded - it was light years ahead of anything else known to be on the air at the time, and I could not believe that neither I nor anyone else savvy on radio history that I knew of had heard of him. At the instant the show ended, I knew I had to obtain more of his shows! That lead me to a very special lady named Andrea Walsh who had not only been the source of that aircheck but who had also over the years collected every aircheck of his shows she could get, as well as archiving as much as possible his life not only in radio but also in television and film, ultimately becoming a good friend to both Jim himself and his family. Through Andrea, I also got a chance to befriend Jim in the twilight of his life, and she put me into contact with other great people such as Jim's eldest son Darr and the great audio/visual/music maven Dave Stuckey. I also got the chance to digitally remaster dozens and dozens of broadcasts both Jim and Andrea sent to me on cassette, as well as many records, photocopies and scanned photos and documents.

When the Jersey Journal and Bayonne Journal both ran their stories about me on October 17th and 18th respectively, 2007, both included photos of a framed picture he signed to me that hangs proudly in my studio, The "Ozone" Lair... but only 3 weeks later, on November 6, 2007, his son Darr let us all know that Jim died peacefully shortly after a visit with him at the Buena Vista Care Center in Goleta, California. It is now apparent that these two stories about me were also the last two stories that referred to Jim before his death. I feel a great sense of awe and responsibility both for it; indeed, the last cassette I received from Jim arrived a few days after his death with a hand-written note from him requesting that he receive a copy of those articles "for your old pal Jim". A scan of these stories and the photos of Jim featured in them are included on this MP3 DVD, one of which proudly adorns the cover of this title.

As I said in response to Darr's Yahoo Groups message, and in a post on the WFMU website, "Jim was and is a legend and I'm sure those of us who love and revere the man will work to ensure that his historic contributions are remembered and appreciated"...

...then on June 2nd 2012, Andrea died in a car accident. She was a gateway for so many people to appreciate Jim, as well as many other great treasures of and from his era. Without her, the world is indeed a lesser place, and so many people who would have come to know Jim's work would be the worse for it. I know Jim's life was a greater one for her being in it.
